Heath Webb is a Texas native, with his roots scattered throughout the state. The wayward lifestyle of his childhood taught him the lessons of life on the road at an early age, making a career as a musician the obvious choice. "My introduction to the world of Texas songwriters came when I was very young. I remember listening to Jerry Jeff Walker's Greatest Hits in my uncle's old Toyota 4x4. I really enjoyed the music but it was Guy Clark's song, 'L.A. Freeway,' that made me realize this is what I wanted to do for a living." After high school Heath worked different jobs while learning how to play some of the songs he was raised on, but he could not shake his desire to combine the two and actually make his living playing and writing music. "When I was twenty years old a friend told me about South Plains College. They had a program that taught you to write and play music. When I looked into it further, I was shocked by the number of great Texas musicians who were alumni. This is what I had always wanted to do, so I enrolled as fast as I could." Heath found his niche and soon developed a sound and style all his own. Before long, he was playing acoustic shows with fellow students, and opening at local clubs. If you ask Heath to describe his style of music, he will tell you that it is a mix of folk and alternative country. Some of the artists he has drawn from are Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen, Ryan Adams, Bruce Springsteen, and Wilco. His biggest influence when it comes to his songwriting is Townes Van Zandt. After a short time at school, Heath recorded a demo of original songs and handed it out to fellow musicians. "It started out as something I was doing for fun, but it got such a good response that I decided to make an album." Heath's first album, titled "Before I Break," is comprised of personal and biographical songs laced with strong grooves and catchy lyrics. His music and songwriting ability make it clear that this young musician is poised for some very exciting things in the near future. |
