Back on the Scene is more than just the title of JoJo Reed's zydeco album from Louisiana Hot Records in 2000. Loud and clear, Reed uses the phrase as a testament to his determination to bounce back and mount the stage again after a major car crash removed him from the scene. In 1998, a drunk driver plowed into the vehicle that was carrying the musician andReed sustained a number of severe injuries in the crash, including a crushed leg. He also needed reconstructive surgery on his eye socket and jaw. He underwent physical therapy and spent some time in a wheelchair. Four weeks following the collision, he was back and performing in Lafayette, LA, during the Zydeco Extravaganza. The following year, when he had graduated to crutches, he entertained on Zydeco Cruise 1999. He repeated the cruise in 2000, this time minus any walking aids. Reed is a native of Eunice, LA, and graduated from high school there in 1989. He dedicated the recording that heralds his return to his late bassist, Alphonse Paul Ardoin, a grandchild of zydeco and Creole musician Alphonse "Bois Sec" Ardoin. The bass player passed away when he was 21 years old in 1999. Reed often authors his own songs, sometimes collaborating with his producer, arranger, and engineer, Keith Frank. In a few numbers, he gives a tip of his hat to the late giants who have gone before him, including zydeco bandleader John Delafose and zydeco pioneer Boozoo Chavis.
