Slow Rollin Lows
It was a long hot summer, back in 2006. Calvin Johnson, known as “Pug” to all his friends and family, had been playing guitar and writing songs for quite a while by then… the list of inspired, original songs about life, love, and everything in between was getting long.
Across town, Jeremy Porter was wearing out yet another drum set. It was a pattern that continues to this very day. Hard driving beats, well placed and timed perfectly, solidified Jeremy’s recognition as one of the more outstanding percussionists in Southeast Texas. New to the band in December 2009,Mike Reilly, bass player, is an Audio Engineering Major at Lamar State College along with Pug and Jeremy.
Hailing from Fannett, Texas, just outside of Beaumont, the band pays homage to the legends of Texas Music and their own outlaw roots both in their style of performing and the music they play. A song, written by Billy Joe Shaver and performed by Waylon Jennings, gave the band their name as well as the song that is on every set list. Never failing to recognize those that cleared the path, SRL continues blazing a trail with new songs and sounds anchored in true, honest outlaw country heritage. Touring Texas, Louisiana, and beyond since early 2007, the Lows have gained a solid audience both at live shows as well as their “electronic following” on www.radiofreetexas.org where they maintain high positions on the most-requested list. Following in the footsteps of the giants, the Lows have played such iconic Texas Music venues as Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos as well as the local live-music rooms in cities across the region, to the main stage at the RFT Rowdy Float Trip…all in front of fans who keep asking for more.
Their latest CD, "Erie Street," produced by Phil Pritchett contains 14 original songs, all penned by Pug Johnson with some help along the way by Orey Williams & Jamie Talbert. Fellow artists/musicians, Phil Pritchett, Jamie Talbert, Luke Adair and Kasey Klepfer were all happy to be a part of the new CD and can be heard accompanying SRL on multiple tracks. The sophomore album quickly climbed the Lonestar Music charts, and was reviewed by Daniel Miller from Radio Free Texas for an edition of LoneStar Music Magazine, who had this to say about the new CD.......
